Save Plymouth City Bus On Friday May 22nd 2009 Plymouth City Council announced that it was looking to sell some or all of its shares of Plymouth Citybus. Plymouth Citybus has consistantly performed at a profit and has for many years paid an annual premium to the council.
Council leader Vivien Pengelly has stated that the council is "just testing the market", yet it is planned to spend £940,000 of Plymouth Residents' money to investigate the plan, which would suggest that the decision to sell has probably already been made.
The sale of Plymouth Citybus would be disastrous for the people of Plymouth, with the end result almost certainly to be the loss of services that do not make profits. This would include school services and routes designed to help the elderly. Also job losses would be inevitable. Premiums currently paid to the council will be lost, forcing them to either recoup this money through the council tax or further reduce the level of services they deliver to the community.
Public opinion is very much against the sale of Plymouth Citybus, with both staff and members of the public willing to take action to prevent the sale. This website will keep people informed of the latest news regarding the proposed sell-off, and help co-ordinate any action taken to prevent the council from selling off this valuable asset.

Unite Passenger Sector Employment retention and reorganisation in the bus industry are notable concerns, with high quality training needed in most of the large bus companies. Another major issue is pay, which is being addressed by members through negotiation and, where necessary, industrial action and continued campaigns. Unite has drawn up a charter for bus workers which includes a guaranteed rate for the job, eight hours' maximum daily driving time, final salary pensions and quality contracts.

Campaign For Public Ownership The Campaign for Public Ownership is a cross-party organisation which aims to harness public dissatisfaction with privatisation and campaign for a reversal of the disastrous policies of the last twenty-nine years. The Campaign will expose the cost to the public of privatisation, and highlight the inefficiencies and profiteering of the privatised companies. We also strongly urge that the British government does not give a penny of taxpayers money to a privately owned company without the public receiving equity in that company. The Campaign will seek to counter the negative propaganda about public ownership put about by those with a vested financial interest in privatisation. It’s time to bring to an end the Great Privatisation Rip-Off. If you’d like to get involved in our campaign, please email us at Publicownership@hotmail.co.uk
